DOOMED Index: A resource (website) on ranking challenging doom maps (2025)

Spoiler

I posted the site and the competition submission thread in the Speed Demos Subforum on Valentine's Day, but I'm broadcasting it here for some more visibility in case people interested in challenging doom maps don't frequent that part of Doomworld too often.

DOOMED Index: A resource (website) on ranking challenging doom maps (1)

The DOOMED Index is basically a website I made to a) centralize some current information and zeitgeist around difficult doom maps b) encourage 100% runs of challenging doom maps and c) to scratch a competition itch for anyone who gets that like me. Most of the people in this part of Doomworld can disregard the last goal, but I think the site might be of interest to those interested in seeing what the most difficult doom maps are that have been UV-Maxed OR have yet to be UV-Maxed despite them being potentially doable, or of interest to those who want to know how challenging maps rank against one another, or of interest to those wondering where their own "relative skill level" lies based on the difficulty of the maps they play compared to the index.

If you want, you can even use the site to help increase your relative skill, and be able to take on more difficult maps that previously had looked too intimidating for yourself. There are over 400 difficult doom maps on the site, and you can practice a myriad of specific or general skills, situations, knowledge application, strategization of encounters, platforming, performing tricks, etc.. If you want, you can look at the site as a supplement or substitute for the Skill Progression Thread, which is a bit older and outdated now, and also more limited in its scope.

How it Works:

Spoiler

The index has a few pages that are pretty self-explanatory. The Top 30 page just lists the top 30 hardest maps that have been UV-Maxed, and the Competition and Players pages just list details/rules for the annual competition and some player stats respectively. But the main bulk of the site is dedicated to the index itself, as well as a bounty list.

The main index is where UV-Maxed maps of high difficulty are displayed. They are ranked in a tier-list format, with each tier representing a group of maps of the same ballpark in difficulty. From hardest to easiest, the tiers are:

- DOOMED (nigh impossible, large effort from the best challenge players)

- Legendary (extremely hard maps, large effort from strong challenge players)

- Elite (very hard maps, large effort from decent challenge players)

- Jaded (fairly hard maps, less effort for stronger challenge players, more for weaker challenge players)

- Veteran (hard maps, on the easier side of the index but not a free contest)

- Marine (very hard maps for average non-challenge seeking player)

- Fairweather (pretty easy maps for the index, but might be pretty tough for average players who aren't familiar with hard maps)

Each map are also given certain tags based on their attributes as far as map length, platforming difficulty, and if there's tricks present in them or not. Every map 's placement is done through community consensus with the easiest route and best strategies considered. In terms of the competition side of the site, point values are awarded based on the difficulty of the map completed; a Fairweather (lowest tier map) UV-Max is not worth as much as a Marine map UV-Max, which is not worth as much as a Veteran map UV-Max, etc..

The bounty list is where unmaxed difficult maps are shown. The same difficulty and tag system applies, but the point values for each map are marked up compared to equivalently difficult maps on the main index, as to encourage UV-Maxing them more than maps that have already been maxed.

There is also a legacy list page, which displays a tierchart for what are out-of-rotation maps (read about it on the site), and a tierchart for maps that were once on the index but were cut from it at some point for one reason or another (presumably to trim size of index and allow new maps to come in).

If you want to join in on the discussion, development of the site, give feedback in the rankings or what maps you want to see make it onto the index, then join Pacifist Paradise, otherwise known as Meowgi's Server:https://discord.gg/GKBxP66Q

If you have any questions, fire away in this thread, or even in the submissions thread, or wherever you think my ears will find it. Maybe the site gets a large enough following or interest to warrant its own server at some point, we'll see.

INSTANT FAQ:

Q: Why am I not taken anywhere when I click on some of the clickable maps on the index?
A: Due to a partially self-imposed lack in automation, a lot of the individual pages for maps come down to manual work, and that's just a lot of time that I don't have for about another 2 months, but it was considered not enough of an essential aspect to the site to let it sit in-dev for longer before this "larger public release". Wanted to get this out somewhat close to when I had initially released its beta on Feb 14th, in case the gap became too long between the two that new players from this announcement would be at a complete disadvantage compared to those who had known of the site's competition earlier.

Q: This site is confusing! This concept(s) is confusing! What is going on here?
A: I have a low-quality screen recording walkthrough of the site linked under the intro/trailer video at the bottom of this post. I would link it directly here, but it's honestly shameful to do that to unassuming viewers of this post, better to leave it to those actually grabbed by the idea of the site to go dig that extra step for it.

Q: Why are you bringing up a speedrunning topic in this part of the forum? This is for general doom topics only.
A: This actually isn't a speedrunning focused website or competition. One of its goals was to encourage challenge maxing and to strictly deviate from speedruns that way; you do not have to have any considerations for your demo's final times if you end up participating in the demo fun. Also I framed the site as a resource first and foremost in this subforum, so that's why I posted it here (besides more visibility for those potentially interested in this topic).
